| The
Calm and Safe Options
The Calm & Safe Programme of in-house training
offers a number of options, which include both theoretical and practical
training for the management of challenging behaviours.
Option 1
The Management of Challenging Behaviours
Duration 1 day
Participants will learn about the key areas of development
that can lead to difficult and challenging behaviours. They will
learn why some of their clients may have serious difficulties with
social and communication skills. Ways of encouraging and developing
appropriate behaviours will be considered. How risk assessments
and structured care planning can be used to produce a safer and
more rewarding environment.
No physical techniques are taught on Option 1.
Option 2
Preventing and Responding to Aggressive Behaviour
Duration: 1 day
The causes of aggressive behaviours and how to recognise
them at an early stage will be considered. Strategies to defuse
aggression in the first place and to prevent it escalating into
violence will be learned. Simple but effective physical techniques,
including breakaway and gentle restraint, will be learned for protecting
self, colleagues and clients from injury.
Option 3
The Management of Challenging Behaviours
and
Preventing and Responding to Aggressive Behaviour
Duration: 2 days
This option combines both of the above training days.
Option 4
The Calm and Safe Programme
Duration: 3 days
The 3 day programme incorporates all the elements
of the 1 and 2 day options. The additional day is available to achieve
higher levels of competence in the safe handling of various forms
of physical confrontation. This programme is recommended for people
who have to manage violent and aggressive behaviour safely on a
regular basis. The emphasis is on preventing aggression and violence
whenever possible and defusing situations when they occur, whilst
being able to deal with attacks safely and calmly with the minimum
risk of injury
The Calm and Safe Approach
Employees and clients in many work environments
are faced daily with challenging behaviours. Social and health care
settings can be particularly prone to aggressive behaviours and
even physical violence. In such circumstances employees have a duty
to protect clients from harm and employers a duty to protect employees.
It is everybody's responsibility to maintain a safe working environment.
The Calm and Safe Programme has been developed by care and training
professionals to provide ethical training options for care staff
and educators. The emphasis on all of the options is to maintain
a calm and safe environment for everybody. An understanding of the
causes of aggression and the ability to anticipate problems before
they occur is foremost in the approach. Strategies for de-escalation
and calming are taught as the first option. Safe, non-aversive methods
are taught for defending clients, colleagues and self from injury.
These include breakaway and gentle restraint techniques.
The programme offers four training options, which can be mixed and
matched to the needs of your organisation. For environments where
physical violence is rare but where there is some risk from aggressive
behaviours, Option 1 might be appropriate. For settings where there
is a high risk injury from aggressive behaviours, Option 4 offers
comprehensive training in the management of challenging behaviours
and the skills of de-escalation and defence. The emphasis is always
on avoiding physical confrontation if possible.
Option 1 offers no training in physical techniques, concentrating
entirely on pre-emptive strategies based on environmental, organisational
and psychological approaches. The other options involve learning
physical techniques and manoeuvres and therefore involve a high
level of participation. In all cases the trainers will take the
needs of the participants into account. Ethical techniques are taught,
which are adapted to reflect the real life experiences of the participants
and will help to keep them safe from the risks they are faced with.
The Calm and Safe options are suitable for a range of clients in
social, care and education settings. The programmes can be modified
for specialist services, such as those for autism, with appropriate
theoretical models. Please make your particular needs known on enquiry.
The physical techniques taught are ethical, safe and not oppressive.
They are equally suitable for men and women of any stature or build. |
